Obituary for Joyce Elaine Schuerger

Joyce Elaine Schuerger, age 73, passed away peacefully, while holding her true love’s hand, on December 21, 2019. She was born December 20, 1946 in Seattle, Washington to Richard Max and Bernice Elaine Thornbrue. Joyce eloped and married her true love, Albert Richard Schuerger, in February of 1969. Al and Joyce were blessed with almost 51 years of marriage, and in February of 2019, they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary by renewing their vows while surrounded by family in the Fern Grotto of Kauai.

Joyce loved sewing for others and was a seamstress for many years. She was awarded a scholarship from the University of Washington for her talent. Joyce was a costume designer for the Seattle Opera and The Act in Everett, Washington. Her journey as a seamstress lead her to work with the Miss Washington Pageant, the Enchanted World live doll display, and numerous theatrical productions in Alaska.

In 1979, Al and Joyce moved to Alaska, where Joyce drove a truck and camper up the Alcan Highway, while Al drove the moving van. After the van broke down, Al, Joyce, Aimee, and Arron had to stay in the campground at Muncho Lake, BC, while they waited for the van parts to arrive. During this time, there was little money left, so Joyce would bake cookies and have the kids sell them to the tourists to make ends meet. This is one of our many treasured family memories.

Joyce also had a huge heart for children and was a daycare provider and preschool teacher for Providence Hospital’s Daycare Center, Shiloh Baptist, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

Joyce was a member of Denali 16 Order of the Easter Star and a past member of Waheed Court #81 Ladies of the Oriental Shrine.

Most people knew Joyce as someone who always had a smile on her face and joy in her heart, despite the challenges she faced during her lifetime. She was born with a full, open cleft palate and by the time she was a teen, she had 26 major surgeries in attempt to correct it, however it was never successfully closed. As an adult, Joyce miraculously survived a horrific car accident. Later, she struggled with the daily challenges of diabetes, lupus, cancer, strokes, kidney failure, and congestive heart failure. Despite these struggles, Joyce was truly a fighter and was even called “The Comeback Girl” by one of her physicians.

Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Al; her children: Aimee Larimer and Arron Schuerger; son-in-law, Carl Larimer; seven grandchildren: Tyler and Breanna Larimer; Katelyn Moye; Timithy, Logan, Julianne, and Abram Schuerger; and great-grandson, Greyson Larimer. She was preceded in death by her parents and her first daughter, Heidi Elaine. Joyce will be missed dearly and forever in our hearts.

A funeral service will be held at Chester Park, 2020 Muldoon Road, Anchorage, Alaska at 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 4, 2020. A graveside memorial will be held in April, in Portland, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Al Aska Shriner’s PTF Fund, 1930 E Northern Lights Blvd, Anch, AK 99508.
