Obituary for Helen Sorensen Meeker

Helen Sorensen Meeker was born on February 26, 1923 in Jeffers, Cottonwood County Minnesota to Eiler Sorensen and Christine Mosbaek Sorensen and passed away peacefully at her home in Homer Alaska on September 2, 2020 at the age of 97.

She grew up in Marshalltown Iowa and attended Iowa State University in Ames, majoring in home economics & chemistry. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing bridge and painting. She also enjoyed music, both classical & big band.

July 1, 1944, she married George W. Meeker at Lovely Lane Chapel in St Simons Island Georgia, USA. One of the “Greatest Generation”, during WWII she worked on Coronado Island in San Diego. Her civilian capacity was a mechanics helper, carpenter, and logging aircraft engines for repair. She always told stories of their life during the war, how life was different then, and how all Americans came together and sacrificed for the good of this great nation.

After the war, she and George settled in Garden City Kansas in a sod home and became wheat farmers. In 1995, they moved to Homer. In 2017 they were honored as Pioneers of Finney County Kansas. She supported her husband in his career, helping him to write & edit speeches and was an excellent speech writer.

Helen is survived by her two sons, Douglas (Melanie) of Homer Alaska and Larry (Cindy) of Lake Quivira Kansas, 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, husband of 74 years George, grandson Damon Meeker, sisters Elsie Lougheed and Madie Horton, and brother Bob Sorensen.

At her request there will be no memorial service. Interment will be at Hickerson Memorial Cemetery next to her husband George, in Homer.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, Helen asked that contributions be made to “the arts”.

Arrangements made by Homer Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Please sign or visit her online guestbook at AlaskanFuneral.com.
