Obituary for Earl Dominic Korynta

Earl Dominic Korynta, 74, passed away on January 26, 2018 at Alaska Regional Hospital surrounded by family.

Earl Korynta was born May 3, 1943 in Ardoch, ND to Dominic and Mae (Riske) Korynta. He grew up on his family’s farm in North Dakota with his mother, father, six brothers and four sisters. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from UND and his Master’s Degree in Engineering Management from UAA. Earl married Kathleen (Karella) Korynta on October 7th, 1972 and they began their lives together in Anchorage, AK where they raised their three boys.

Earl started his career working as a bridge and highway engineer for Los Angeles County. He moved to Alaska in 1965 and worked for the Alaska Department of Transportation as an airport engineer. In 1974 he became a founding member of what would become USKH, Inc. As a past principal and president he was instrumental in developing USKH into one of the largest multidisciplinary architecture / engineering firms in Alaska. His engineering career, spanning more than 50 years, had a significant impact on the State of Alaska’s infrastructure. He was involved in the design of airports, cargo ports, housing developments, schools, subdivisions and numerous other projects throughout the state. Earl has many professional accolades including Alaska Engineer of the Year and most recently ENR Northwest’s 2017 Legacy Award. He was past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers – Alaska Section and was a founding member of the Alaska Professional Design Council. His professionalism, dedication, and passion fostered his position as an industry leader, mentor and lasting influence.

Earl was also passionate about many things outside of his career. He developed his love of flying at an early age and became a private pilot during his studies at UND. He logged thousands of hours of flight time as a private pilot. He enjoyed the freedom associated with flying and used his piloting skills to travel throughout Alaska and North America. He loved spending time at his cabin, hunting, camping, golfing and, most notably, spending time with his family and friends. Earl was a dedicated husband (of 45 years), brother, father, uncle and grandfather. He was a compassionate, humble and kind man who was truly devoted to his family. Earl’s love for his wife, children and grandchildren was unequivocal and he relished every moment he was able to spend with them.

Earl was preceded in death by his father Dominic Korynta and his mother Mae Korynta. He is survived by his wife Kathleen Korynta; three sons and daughters-in-law; Christopher & Tami, Kevin & Tracy and Mark & Heather; grandchildren Paige, Ethan, Addysen, Rese and Asher. He is also survived by six brothers; Ray, Dale, Arnie, Dennis, Gene and Rick and four sisters; Rullie, Marlene, Joy and Sheri. He also has many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
A viewing will be held at 5:00 p.m. followed by a vigil at 6:00 p.m. on February 15, at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, 2901 Huffman Road. A funeral mass will be held February 17 at 11:00 a.m., at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. A Reception & Celebration of Life will be held at O’Malley’s on the Green, 3651 O’Malley Road, immediately following the mass. Eulogies are welcome at the vigil and reception.

Earl’s combination of intelligence, humility and compassion made him a truly unique man who touched the lives of many. His legacy will live on through the projects he created, the people he influenced and the family he raised.
