Obituary for Maria Elena Walsh

Maria Elena Walsh passed away on Friday, May 29th, of Advanced Alzheimer’s Disease. Maria Elena was born in Brownsville, Texas the 5th of 6 children. Life was hard in Brownsville, particularly after her father passed away when she was 12 years old. Her mother was left to raise 6 children on social security alone. Maria Elena wanted a better life for herself and her way of doing that was to enlist in the United States Air Force, which she did in 1967. After being assigned to the AF Medical Center in San Antonio, she met her soon to be husband Michael Walsh. After a 7-month courtship they were married in December of 1968, a union that lasted over 51 years. They had their first child, Susan, in November 1969. They were reassigned to several AF bases including ones in Biloxi, MS, San Antonio, TX, Anchorage, AK, and Dayton, OH. In 1972 they were blessed with her second child Cindy. She adored her children and was very nurturing and loving. She was a fierce advocate for her children and that passion carried on into her future career and volunteer work.

Maria Elena studied Business and Paralegal courses at Southmost College and the University of Texas San Antonio. Maria Elena held many positions in the legal field. She was also the Executive Director of the Alaska Pro Bono program, investigator for the Disability Law Center, and a Worker Compensation officer for the State of Alaska.

Maria Elena was most proud of her volunteer work in the community. She worked tirelessly as a member of the Latino Lions Club, was a liaison for Habitat for Humanity, was on the Board of Directors for ASSETS, Inc. She was also the President of Alaskans for a Drug Free Youth and founded the Youth Station in downtown Anchorage to help young adults by finding mentorships, job skills, and a safe, warm place to be. She volunteered weekly for veterans housed in the domiciliary, helping them to navigate the health and legal system. She also received numerous awards and citations including 2 Governor’s Proclamations for Community Service, the FBI Community Leadership Award, and was an Athena Award Finalist.

Maria Elena loved to travel, her goal was to take each of her grandchildren on a special trip. She had many hobbies including genealogy, Texas history, scrapbooking, quilting, and was the author of a movie script about her family history. Her stories were also published in several books about the Rio Grande Valley.
