Bird Creek resident of 48 years, Daniel Allen Smith, Sr., passed away peacefully on November 23, 2018. Dan came to Alaska in 1944 on steamship from Seattle, WA at 11 years old by himself, joining his mother and sister in Anchorage.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War as an Aircraft Mechanic until his discharge led him back to the United States in January of 1956. After returning to Alaska, Dan met and married Ruth Gaetke in 1959. Together they raised five children.
Dan's lifelong occupation was both as a Commercial Fisherman & Anchorage School District Bus Driver for the Rainbow to Girdwood bus route. He also owned & operated Seward Silver Salmon Cache during the summer months until 1979. He was also a Charter Boat operator. During this time, his whole family was also involved in the operation. After retiring, Dan spent many hours enjoying wood working and camping at Echo and Loon Lake with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years Ruth, daughter Carol Stevenson, and brother in law Kenyon Marquiss.
Dan is survived by his sister Grace Marquiss of Anchorage; children Sally Sandoval (Bob), Virginia Adams (Ron), Daniel Smith, Jr. (Cynthia), and Oliver Smith. Dan is also survived by his grandchildren: Eric, Lisa, Brenda, Robert, Pete, Amanda, Rebecca, Roland Jr., Brian, Oliver, as well as many great and great great grandchildren.
